D.O.C.G. CONEGLIANO-VALDOBBIADENE | THE PYRAMID

 

 

The 1st August 2009 the Prosecco produced in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area acquires the DOCG denomination. This is a very important goal which underlines the excellent quality achieved in the Prosecco Wine production. The little brown band with a numbered seal allows the traceability of the bottle at any time. This means that the consumer can precisely go up to the story of that wine. Each phase of the production is severely controlled.

The DOCG dicipline mantains most of the ruels previuosly adopted:

  • All labels have the name of Conegliano Valdobbiadene followed by Prosecco Superiore in case of sparkling wine.
  • The production area is the historical one, composed by the 15 hilly villages between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene
  • The wine is produced using at least 85% Glera grapes and a maximum of 15% Verdiso, Bianchetta, Perera, Glera Lunga
  • The production of the DOCG Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene area is 135 quintals per hactar
  • The innovation is due to the introduction of Rive, a specific type of sparkling prosecco, which indicates in the label the name of the village of origin. The term Rive indicates those steep vineyards which generate only sparkling prosecco.
  • The summit of the pyramid is occupied by the Cartizze Superiore which generats 120 quintals per hectar.

The production area extends itself on a surface of 20.000 hectars. The vines are cultivated exclusively on the sunny side of the hill at an altitude between 50 and 500 meters on the sea level. The hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene are located on an ideal position for the viticulture between sea and pre Alps with a temperate climate and high rainfall which boost the growth of Glera vines. The Conegliano area is caracterized by the presence of clay soils of alluvial origin which generate wines with a fruity aroma instead of the Valdobbiadene area which is composed by ancient fields which give orgin to great wines with fruity and floral scents.

 

The poduction of Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG is defined by the disciplinary which controls the grapes production, their fermantation. The sparkling wine is produced according to the Italian method that provides the fermaentation in autoclave in order to enhance primary and secondary scents, the fruity and floral aromas and to conserve the elegance, the vitality and the freshness of wine.

There are three types of Prosecco Superiore Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG:

Sparkling/Frizzy/Still

The Sparkling one has three different qualities:

  • Brut maximun 12 g/l residual sugar
  • Dry from 17 to 32 g/l residual sugar
  • Extra Dry from 12 to 17 g/l residual sugar
